Serengeti vs Masai Mara: The Ultimate Comparison
It's the most common question in African safari planning: Serengeti or Masai Mara? Both offer world-class wildlife, but they're very different experiences. Here's an honest comparison to help you decide.
Size & Space
Serengeti: 14,763 km² — one of the largest ecosystems on Earth. You can drive for hours without seeing another vehicle. The vastness is humbling.
Masai Mara: 1,510 km² — roughly 10% the size of Serengeti. More concentrated wildlife but also more concentrated tourists, especially during migration season.
The Great Migration
Serengeti: The migration is present for 9-10 months of the year as herds circle through different areas. River crossings happen at Grumeti (June-July) and Mara River from the Tanzania side.
Masai Mara: The herds are present July-October only. River crossings are dramatic but viewing spots can be crowded with 30+ vehicles.
Wildlife Density
Serengeti: Exceptional predator density, especially in the Seronera Valley. Best for cheetah sightings in Africa. Leopards common around kopjes.
Masai Mara: Very high lion density. Excellent for big cat sightings year-round. The Mara Triangle is less crowded.
Cost Comparison
Serengeti: Park fees $70/day. Mid-range safaris from $300-500/day. More affordable budget options available.
Masai Mara: Conservancy fees $80-120/day. Generally 20-30% more expensive than equivalent Serengeti experiences.
Crowds
Serengeti: Due to its vast size, you rarely feel crowded except at popular river crossing points. Many areas feel completely wild and private.
Masai Mara: Can feel busy, especially during peak migration (August-September). Conservancies offer more exclusive experiences.
Our Verdict
Choose Serengeti for: vastness, year-round migration, better value, fewer crowds, and a more authentic wilderness feeling. Choose Masai Mara for: concentrated July-October crossings, easy combination with other Kenya parks, and shorter driving distances.
