Spotting the Big Five in Tanzania

Tanzania is one of the best countries in Africa for Big Five sightings. With vast national parks, healthy wildlife populations, and expert guides, your chances of seeing all five iconic animals are excellent.

Lion (Simba)

Best parks: Serengeti (largest population in Africa, ~3,000), Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire. Best time: Dry season (June-October) when grass is short. Tips: Look near kopjes in Serengeti, around water sources, and in the early morning when they're most active.

African Elephant (Tembo)

Best parks: Tarangire (largest herds, 3,000+), Serengeti, Ngorongoro. Best time: Dry season when they concentrate near rivers. Tips: Tarangire in July-October offers herds of 200+ elephants at the river.

Black Rhino (Faru)

Best parks: Ngorongoro Crater (best chance, ~26 individuals), Serengeti (Moru Kopjes area). Best time: Early morning in Ngorongoro. Tips: Bring good binoculars — rhinos are often distant. Your guide knows their territories.

Leopard (Chui)

Best parks: Serengeti (Seronera Valley), Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro. Best time: Early morning and late afternoon. Tips: Scan tree branches — leopards rest in sausage trees and acacias. Serengeti's Seronera area has the highest density.

Cape Buffalo (Nyati)

Best parks: Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, Arusha National Park. Best time: Year-round — buffalo are abundant. Tips: Large herds are common near water. Old solitary bulls (dagga boys) are often found in thickets.

Your Best Bet for All Five

Ngorongoro Crater offers the highest probability of seeing all Big Five in a single day. Combine it with Serengeti for the best overall experience.
